When a recognition notice identifies substantial differences

Practical next questions after a German authority finds differences in a foreign qualification.

When a recognition notice identifies substantial differences

A decision can be a map, not the end

In some regulated professions, an assessment may find substantial differences between overseas training and the German reference qualification. The notice should show what was compared and what options are available. Read the operative section, reasons, deadlines and information on legal remedies separately.

Questions to organise

Ask which differences may be addressed through an adaptation period, knowledge test, aptitude test or additional evidence, depending on the profession and legal basis. Clarify who offers the measure, admission conditions, language level, cost and earliest realistic start.

Employment experience can sometimes be relevant to the comparison, but its evidential value depends on detail. A certificate saying only that someone “worked as a nurse” reveals less than dates, hours, department, responsibilities and procedures.

Know when consultation is not enough

If you believe the authority applied the wrong facts, a legal deadline is running, or you want to challenge the notice, consult an appropriately qualified lawyer or official specialist service promptly. Administrative planning and legal representation are different services.
